Miyajima

The island of Miyajima, just south of Hiroshima, is the home of the torii gates floating in the harbor that you may have seen in travel brochures or on TV. One of the three most beautiful sights in Japan (according to the Japanese travel bureau), ships once could only sail through the gate to reach the island; since the island was sacred, it was forbidden to set foot on the shore. That has since changed, and after landing, Eleanor and I had a fantastic 10 course meal at our hotel, and explored the shrine in both the night and in the morning. She has since called it her favorite place in Japan.
