Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park
In early August, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Seeing the A-Bomb Dome, an Industrial Promotions Hall before the bombing, I already knew some about the magnitude of the event. However, the realization that I was standing where atomic destruction had occurred did not sink in until Eleanor and I visited the museum. The first exhibit deals with the history of Hiroshima, including the bombing in 1945. The second part of the museum then tells the stories of the bombing, and includes clothing, dolls, and other items owned by victims. I hate to say that Eleanor and I had to leave the museum two thirds of the way through this exhibit, but the horrors became too much to bear. Seeing the exhibit, though necessary to learn seemingly first-hand about the atomic bomb, was one the most emotional wrenching things either of us have ever done.
